Inverter Generators


The Honda EU Series Inverter Generators provide stable, clean power in a smaller, lighter, quieter portable gas generator that can now be paralleled for greater output - making it the best choice for HD Digital Cinema production. Honda engineers accomplish this by first integrating parts from the engine and generator set into a revolutionary combination flywheel/alternator. This results in a more compact and lighter product.

Second, Honda's sine-wave inverter technology provides smoother, higher quality power flow that is ideal for frequency and voltage fluctuation-sensitive equipment such as HD Camcorders, laptop computers, back up hard drives, and HMI ballasts. Honda's inverter technology accomplishes this by taking the raw power produced by the generator and passes it through a microprocessor controlled multi-step process to condition it. First, the generator's combination flywheel/alternator produces high voltage multiphase AC power. The AC power is then converted to DC. Finally the DC power is converted back to AC by an inverter. The inverter cleans and stabelizes the the power to make it equal to or better than household power with a waveform distortion factor of less than 2.5%. A special microprocessor controls the entire process, as well as the speed of the engine - eliminating the need for expensive crystal sync governers.

Honda's Inverter Generators are substantially quieter than traditional models. The Inverter Generators feature Honda's original two-tiered noise dampening system and quiet Honda engines. But, to make them even quieter, the inverter generators are made of special new sound dampening materials in a triple chamber design. For example, the noise of the EU6500i generator has been greatly reduced by integrating a triple-chamber construction for the exhaust, engine and air intake. The exhaust chamber is now lined with a sound-absorbing material and houses a larger muffler that is secured to the frame and enclosed in the body of the generator, reducing both noise and vibration. The muffler is the first USDA certified “spark-arresting” muffler to be used in a portable gas generator. The engine chamber is also lined with a sound-dampening material and has fully sealed panels to contain acoustic energy. The central air intake and exhaust system is designed to reduce mechanical noise by making airflow smoother by use of an air guide and intake nose. A newly designed rigid frame also aids in the sound attenuation of the EU6500i, as does Honda’s Eco-Throttle. The micro processor controlled Eco-Throttle makes the Honda Inverter Generators not only more fuel efficient but also incredibly quiet.

Honda's Eco-Throttle automatically adjusts the generator's engine speed to produce only the power needed for the application in use. Traditional generators have to run at a constant 3600 RPM to produce stable 60 hertz (cycle) electricity. Whereas, the Inverter Technology of the Honda Inverter Generators enable them to run at much slower RPMs while maintaining frequency and power for the requested load. Because the engine does not have to run at full speed constantly, the Eco-Throttle reduces fuel consumption by up to 40%. But, of greater importance for film applications, not running at full speed constantly, the engine is much quieter. Honda's inverter generators are substantially quieter than traditional models. See the decibel chart below to get a good idea of the difference.

Honda's specifications for EU Series generator range from 49 to 60 dBA (depending on the load) at 9 ft. which translates to 34 to 44 dBA at 50 ft. This is well below what is required for trouble free location recording and is ten decibels or half as loud as the comparable EM7000isAB and ES6500 generators typically found at lighting rental houses. This makes Honda's EU Series Inverter Generators the quietest portable gas powered generators for motion picture production.
A new feature that we have developed for the EU6500i generator, that is of tremendous benefit to filmmakers when used with one of our Transformer/Distros (either 60- or 84A), is paralleling capability. Paralleling two Honda EU6500s with our proprietary Parallel Control Box and one of our Transformer/Distros will give you a combined 100A from the machines (see Transformer/Distros below for more details.)

EB10000
10KW DAVR Generators


For unparalleled raw power, we offer the new Honda EB10000. With a maximum output of 10,000 watts, the rugged EB10000 is compact, lightweight and features a range of design innovations that contribute to exceptional performance. These include a narrow-shaped design; a centralized exhaust mechanism; a newly developed alternator; a sophisticated Digital Automatic Voltage Regulator (DAVR), and the best fuel efficiency and lowest noise in its class. All of which make this new model better suited for motion picture lighting than previous AVR generators from Honda.

With the introduction of a digital AVR (DAVR) system into the EB10000 generator, Honda is the first to integrate digital processing into the controller of a small portable gas generator. Able to hold the voltage stable within ±1% of the mean voltage (as opposed to the ±3% of traditional analogue AVRs), the EB10000’s DAVR substantially improves the power output capability of this new model. And, since the generator is more intelligent, more of its’ operation is automated. In addition to voltage regulation, the microprocessor of the EB10000’s DAVR is capable of implementing more complex forms of control than were possible with traditional analogue AVRs – making its’ operation surer, faster and more reliable (use this link for details .)

For an industrial model, the new Honda EB10000 operates at an extremely quiet noise level – at approximately 72 decibels at 23 feet (equivalent to the noise of a vacuum cleaner). This low noise level is achieved through a large muffler that includes a punching pipe (a perforated mechanism that allows for the smooth release of exhaust gas.) Finally, the EB10000 is OSHA compliant with neutral bond and full generator GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Protection) on all outlets (use this link for details .)

The one power function that the EB10000’s DAVR is not able to control is AC Frequency (Hz). For that reason, you should use only “flicker free” electronic HMI ballasts on them. And, while markedly better than Analogue AVRs at handling harmonic currents, the Voltage waveforms generated by DAVRs are effected non-the-less and so only Power Factor Corrected (PFC) HMI, Kino, and LED ballasts should be used on them (use this link for details .) But, when it comes to raw power, the EB 10000 is unparalleled.

When used with our new 84A Full Power Transformer/Distro with “Voltage Select”, the EB10000 is capable of providing a silent 84 Amps, in a single 120V circuit, on set – enabling you to use larger lights (like 10ks or Nine-Lights), or more smaller lights, than has ever been possible on a portable generator (use this link for details.) Full Power Transformer/Distros

Our line of innovative Full Power Transformer/Distros enable you to access more power from portable generators or common 240v household outlets than you could ever before. Available in two sizes (60A for the EU6500is & 84A for the EB10000), our Full Power Transformer/Distros work by stepping down 240V power, from either a portable generator, paralleled generators, or household outlet, to a single 120V circuit capable of powering bigger lights, or more smaller lights, than was possible before. Common 240V sources found on interior locations include Range Plugs, Dryer Plugs, and special receptacles installed for Window Air Conditioners. Our Full Power Transformer/Distros can also be used to step down 240 Volts supplied by two regular 20A wall outlets on opposing service legs. By giving you access to more house power through common 240V house outlets, our Full Power Transformer/Distros can eliminate the need for tie-ins or large diesel generators.

On exterior locations where house power is not available, or to simply supplement house power, our Full Power Transformer/ Distro offers a number of benefits when used to step-down the enhanced 7500W output of our modified Honda EU6500is to a single 60A/120V circuit, or the new 10kw Honda EB10000 to a single 84A/120V circuit. Of these, the most important benefit to be gained by using a Transformer/Distro is that it makes it possible to combine the outputs of two EU6500s. It does so by isolating the generators from high neutral currents that can lead to dangerous “cross-current” between the two generators when they are operated in parallel (called paralleling) with a common neutral bus (use this link for detailed information how this is the case.) Paralleling two Honda EU6500s with our proprietary Parallel Control Box will give you a combined 100 Amps from the machines. A complete system consists of two modified Honda EU6500s, a Paralleling Control Box, and one of our Transformer/Distros (either 60- or 84- Amps.)

The generators require modification to interface with the Paralleling Control Box, which syncs the frequency and equalizes the load between the generators. Our proprietary paralleling control circuitry uses the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) of the generator's inverters to control the load sharing. The phase angles of the two generators are synchronized using open loop architecture. The final function of our control box is to switch the outputs of the inverters to a common bus after their frequencies are locked in step (same phase angle and time base.)

To provide power that is readily accessible, our Paralleling Control Box is outfitted with both an industry standard 240V Bates receptacle, as well as a "Hollywood Style" 240V Twist-lock receptacle. The 240V Bates pocket is there to power larger HMIs than has ever been possible before on Hondas (4k - 9k ARRIMAXs.) The "Hollywood Style" 240V Twist-lock receptacle is there to supply power to either our 60- or 84- Amp Transformer/Distro. The Transformer/Distro serves several important functions in this system, but the one that makes it possible to parallel two EU6500s in the first place, is that it isolates the generators from high neutral return currents that can lead to dangerous neutral “cross-current” between the two generators (use this link for more details.)

Another important benefit to using our Full Power Transformer/ Distros with either paralleled generators or generators operating alone, is that they will step-down the enhanced 240V output to a single 120V circuit that is capable of powering a big Quartz light (like the new Mole 5k Quartz Par or 10k Fresnel) or brighter ARRIMAX HMI (4k or 9k) - thus eliminating the need for the large expensive diesel generators required to power these lights before. And, where our Full Power Transformer/Distro provides access to the full power in a single circuit, it enables you to power more smaller lights off of a generator than you can without it.

How do they do it? Our Full Power Transformer/Distros enable you to more fully utilize the continuous rated power capacity of a generator by enabling you to load it more fully. Without one of our Full Power Transformer/Distros you can never fully utilize the available power of portable generator because the load of a light has to go on one circuit/leg of the generator or the other. For example, when plugging lights into the power outlet panel of a Honda EU6500i Inverter Generator, you reach a point where you can't power an additional 1kw light because there is not 8.4 amps available on either one of the factory installed 20A outlets/leg of the generator. With our 60A Full Power Transformer/Distro you can still add that 1kw light because our 60A Full Power Transformer/Distro not only accesses power through a higher rated circuit (the 30A/240V Twistlock), but it also splits the load evenly over the two legs (4.2A/leg) of the generator on that circuit.

And, because our Full Power Transformer/Distros perfectly balance the load of what ever you plug into them, the generator is capable of handling the larger load more easily because it is perfectly balanced. The best part about our Full Power Transformer/Distros is that they split the load of what ever you plug into it automatically. The iMonitor display on the Honda generators makes it especially easy to load the generator to the max. Simply plug in lights. When the load wattage displayed on the iMonitor reaches 7500 Watts (EU6500is) or 10'000 Watts (EB10000) you are fully utilizing the power capacity of the generator.

An overload alarm on the iMonitor display will tell you if you inadvertently overload the Transformer/Distro. You no longer have to carefully balance the load over the generator's two 20A/120 circuits/legs as you plug in lights because our Full Power Transfomer/Distro does it for you automatically. Now that you are able to fully utilize the generator's available power, you are able to power larger lights, or more smaller lights, than you could without our Full Power Transformer/Distros. Without a doubt, the iMonitor of the Honda generators is a feature that offers tremendous benefit to filmmakers when used with our Full Power Transfomer/Distro.

For example, our modified Honda EU6500i Inverter Generator with our 60A Full Power Transformer/Distro is capable of powering a 2.5kw Par along with the 1200, 800, & 400 Pars of our HD Plug and Play Pkg., plus a couple of Parabeam 400s and Parabeam 200s. Given the light sensitivity of HD Camcorders, this constitutes a complete location lighting package for HD Digital Cinema productions.

Without a doubt, our Full Power Transformer Distros and the extremely quiet Honda Generators make for an unbeatable combination when it comes to providing silent location power. Not only do our Full Power Transformer/Distros enable you to get more useable power out of the generator (60A/EU6500is or 84A/EB10000), but they also greatly simplify your set electrics. Our Full Power Transformer/Distros are configured with the industry standard 60A GPC (Bates) outlet (EU6500is) and 100A GPC (Bates) outlet (EB10000).

Either the 60A GPC outlet (EU6500is), or the 100A GPC outlet (EB10000), can be used to power a 5kw Quartz, 2.5kw HMI Par, or even a Power Factor Corrected 4kw HMI Par like the new Mole 4kw Day Lite Par. With additional GPC extension cables, GPC Splitters, and fused GPC-to-Edison Breakouts (snack boxes) the GPC Outlets on our Full Power Transformer/Distros enable you to run power around your set - breaking out to 20A Edison outlets at convenient points. The best part is that no matter where in the distribution system you plug in, our Full Power Transformer/Distros automatically balance the additional load, so that you don't have to. For example, if you are using the Honda EU6500i generator with our 60A Full Power Transformer/Distro, you simply plug in lights until the load wattage displayed on the iMonitor of the generator control panel reaches 7500Watts. An overload alarm on the iMonitor display will tell you if you inadvertently overload the 60A Transformer/Distro (same for the EB10000 generator with our 84A Full Power Transformer/Distro.)

To record sync sound without picking up any generator noise, add up to 500' of our heavy duty 250V twist-lock cable between the generator and the transformer/distro. This way the generator can be further away, while your plug-in points remain conveniently close to set. You also eliminate multiple cable runs to the generator and the subsequent drop in voltage from line-loss from using standard electrical cords.

To assure full line level (120V) on set, our Full Power Transformer/Distros are designed to compensate for the line loss you will have over a long cable run. Our standard 60A Transformer/Distro is designed to boost the voltage on the load side (secondary) of the transformer by 5 percent. For instance, if you were to plug the Transformer/Distro directly into the generator and feed the supply side (primary) of the transformer with 240 volts from the generator, 127 volts would come out on the secondary side where you plug in the lights. This slight boost compensates for the slight line loss that is unavoidable over a long cable run and enables you to place the generator further from set where you won't hear it (critical to recording audio with the Honda EB10000), yet assures that the supply voltage on the secondary side of the transformer does not drop too low. Without the line-loss compensation of our Transformer/Distros, to avoid voltage drop you have to keep the generator close to set where it will likely be heard on your audio tracks.

"Select" Models allow you to adjust for line-loss to maintain 120V on set

Our "Select" upgrade (optional in our 60A and standard in our 84A Transformer/Distros), enables you to adjust the amount of voltage boost in two 5% steps. This enables you to maintain full line level (120Vs) regardless if the supply voltage has dropped to 228V, or even 216V, from line loss and load running on the generator. To find the optimum switch setting, our "Select" upgrade includes a built-in volt meter that tells you if the line level is too low or too high. Maintaining full line level assures that lights will draw their minimum load and that HMIs with magnetic ballasts will not cut out from a dip in voltage during the striking phase. It also assures that lights, like the new Arri 1800W Baby Max, that operate at the threshold of a 20A circuiit will operate reliably (more details below.)
