ScreenLight & Grip, in partnership with Sonalysts Studios Inc., is now offering Virtual Set Production. Virtual Set Production enables
the total integration of live action, camera movement, and three dimensional computer generated sets in High Definition.
For example, in the production depicted here the Sonalysts team created high resolution virtual sets of urban streets, the cargo holds
of military transport planes, and a research and manufacturing facility, into which were composited military personal operating
the next generation of combat vehicles. For this demonstration video, we even filmed footage of soldiers in combat, with live gun
fire, and composited it into the virtual landscape of a war torn middle eastern city.
What's exciting about this new technology, is that the computer generated sets are three dimensional. The movement and
focal length of the camera are tracked by computer so that as the camera p.o.v. changes the computer generated background plate of the
virtual set change correspondingly. The virtual set in effect becomes three dimensional. For instance, if the camera were to dolly 360
degrees around the fighting vehicle pictured here, the audience would see all four walls of the research lab.
Another exciting thing, about this new technology, that you can see in these production stills, is that it can composite the images
in real time while shooting. In the past,
images could only be composited after they were shot because it would take upwards of several minutes to render one second of
High Definition video. Now the video image can be rendered
in real time. Real time rendering capability gives directors tremendous creative freedom to experiment with framing, staging, and
camera movement in the course of shooting.
But what's most exciting about this new technology, is its' affordability. Once the exclusive domain of big budget feature
production, origination in the 100 Mbps DVCPro HD format puts virtual set production within the budgets of regional commercial, corporate,
and documentary producers. For instance, historical documentary producer's will be able to film convincing recreations on
locations that no longer exist but are computer generated from old photographs or historistical accounts. Corporate
producers will be able to demonstrate how their products fit in a futuristic world of tommorrow. While commercial producers will be able to shoot on
remote or inaccessible locations.
