Affordable Alternatives for Chroma Key & Ultimatte Unlike every other studio in town, we don't think one size fits all. So, rather than having just one discounted package of equipment available in our studio, we offer equipment packages specifically tailored to every type and budget level of production. For example, we offer five heavily discounted equipment packages for Chroma Key shoots alone. They range from the economy small scale to the high end large scale, and each package carries a heavy discount over the a-la-carte pricing that you would pay to put together these packages anywhere else. After all, as the old saying goes, there is more than one way to skin a cat. Each of our Chroma Key packages is perfectly scaled to our 40'x60' studio with its' 70' three wall wrap around hard cyc and 17.5' grid height. 40'x60' is an optimum size for Chroma Key shoots. Unlike smaller studios, it enables you to separate the lighting for the background from the lighting for the talent in the foreground; so that the lighting on your talent does not have to be flat in order to get a good key. Separation also helps to get a cleaner key because it greatly reduces the reflection of green light off the walls and into the shadowed parts of your talent's face. The high 17.5' grid height assures that there will be less fall off from top to bottom on the back wall, and from head to toe on your talent. It also allows room to hang a large silk to further diffuse top lights without it dipping into your shot. Our three wall cyc simply gives you more working room, than a one or two wall cyc, before you shoot off the background. In fact, our three wall cyc gives you more background than our competitor's larger studios with their two wall cycs. That's not all, our studio is the only independent production stage to offer the time-saving amenity of a full pipe grid with distributed power - a feature that can eliminate the $1'000s in additional labor required to light with box truss at our competitor's new studios. These are just a few of the reasons why our studio is better suited for Chroma Key shoots than just about any other studio in town. To help you make an informed decision about which approach is right for your production and budget, we have described here the strengths and limitations of each package. We have even tried to give you an idea of the daily total cost of each approach by including related costs for studio rental, as well as the hidden costs of expendable sales items and lighting and grip crew required (based on prevailing street rates for 10hrs) for each approach. The total daily costs given here are good faith estimates only, based upon our prior experience with typical productions, and are by no means to be considered as flat rates or binding. You are welcome to supply your own crew in addition to our studio manager ($407/10hrs) - but take into account that the setup and wrap estimates are based on crew experienced with these kinds of productions. Our studio manager is an experienced third grip. You should plan to hire at least a gaffer, and for the larger packages a Key Grip and/or Best Boy Electric. We will be happy to refer you to experienced crew; or, if you like, we can hire the grip and electric crew ourselves and serve as the employer of record for an additional paymaster service fee. The most economical approach to Chroma Key uses our Small Studio Pkg. supplemented by a 20x20 Chroma Key Green softgood and frame. This approach (as seen in picture 1) spares you the expense of having to paint the studio walls and floor and requires a smaller crew. But, unfortunately, it does not allow you to shoot your talent full length, from head to toe (unless, of course they are suspended from a wire as in picture 1). Typical cost of this approach is $2'059/day. To give your talent more room to walk and talk, we can paint just the 40' back wall (but not the side walls or floor) of the studio at an additional cost of $350. To light the larger area you would need to supplement our Small Studio Pkg. with five 1kw cyc lights instead of the 20x20 Green Screen. Typical cost of this approach is $1'992.50/day, after the one time painting fee of $350. In order to shoot your talent full length in Chroma Key we would have to paint at least the back wall and floor of the studio at a one time cost of $750. The fee to paint the studio is as high as it is because it covers not only our cost in painting the studio for your shoot, but also painting it back again to the studio default colors, as well as the down time on the studio of two days to actually do the painting. To light just the floor and the 40' back wall of the studio in an economical fashion, you would use our Small Limbo Pkg. This package consists of our small studio pkg. supplemented with 5 - 1kw cyc lights and 12 -1500w scoop lights. This approach (as seen in picture 2) will allow your talent to step into the shot and be seen head to toe. Typical cost of this approach, after the one time studio paint fee, is $2'737/day. For better results, and to give your talent the freedom to walk and talk, you would use one of the following two approaches. In order of cost, the first approach that would allow your talent to walk and talk would be to use our Sm. Studio Pkg. supplemented with 4 - 6kw Space Lights and a Baby 10k w/ Lg. Chimera Bank (as seen in pictures 3,4,& 5). Space Lights are ideal for lighting Chroma Key productions. They go up easily and four of them will light our 70' three wall wrap around hard cyc and the floor of our 40'x60' studio to a high key level. This takes less time and fewer crew members, but the results are not quite as consistent as the next approach. The Baby 10kw Fresnel through a Lg. Chimera Bank makes for a large soft flattering key source. (Alternately, for a little more money, we have a 5'x10' Chimera Soft Bank that can be lamped 8kw for a super soft key source.) Typical cost of this approach, after the one time studio paint fee, is $2'953/day. To get the best results possible you would use our Large Limbo Package - it is specifically designed for this purpose and carries a heavy discount. The package consists of four 5kw Skypans through a 20x20 Overhead Silk for soft even base light; eight 2 bank/1kw cyc lights for even illumination of the studio cyc walls; a Baby 10kw Fresnel through an 8x8 frame of Light Grid Cloth for a super soft key source; a 4kw Studio Super Softlight for fill; and all the additional hardware needed to hang backlights and kickers below the silk. (Alternately, for a little more money, we have a 5'x10' Chimera Soft Bank that can be lamped 8kw for a super soft key source.) With our Lg. Limbo Pkg. you can light the entire floor and all 70' of the three wall cyc, to a higher and more consistent level. This is a bigger job, and usually entails a prelight day. If you were to do it all in one day, you would have to plan on a longer day with more crew. The typical cost of this approach for one 12 hr day shoot is $4'837/day, after the one time studio paint fee. The daily cost for this approach averages out to be less if you budget for an 8hr prelight day. All of these options allow for at least 6 hrs of shooting, after taking into account the time required to hang lights and wrap them at the end of the day. If you need more shooting time, it is probably more cost effective to budget an 8 hr prelight day. We hope this explanation has been helpful.
